The Town, capital of Samothraki, is 6km from Kamariotissa Port.The traditional settlement, built amphitheatrically in the 15th centuryat an altitude of 300m on the slopes of Mount Saos, is listed.Narrow cobbled streets, two storey stone houses with tiled roofs,stone paved squares and a few ‘aitsenia’ houses, which are flatclay-roofed houses. This particulararchitectural style is an example of oneof the most ancient types of buildingin the Mediterranean. Visit the historicTown café, built in 1865, Church of theAssumption of the Virgin Mary (1875)with its precious icons and the “skullsof the Five Martyrs of Samothraki”.Visit Our Saviour’s Chapel, the FolkloreMuseum, the traditional bakery and theruins of the Medieval Castle, built by theGatelouzi in the 15th century. The Town’ssmall shops, elegant coffee shops, bars,taverns and restaurants attract many tourists.
